Reading is about 150 miles northeast of the Beltway, following Interstate 295 north, then I-695 and I-83. Amtrak offers service from Washington to Lancaster, Pa., about 30 miles from Reading.

A common ingredient for Mozart and Mendelssohn? It’s folk and popular music. While classical concerts today may seem light-years removed from popular music downloads, the gap wasn’t always so great. Mozart drew upon hugely popular comic opera (and its wild excesses) as inspiration for parts of this piano concerto—yet the touching melancholy of the second movement is a marked contrast (and a favorite of pianists). Mendelssohn drew upon Scottish folk melodies (from an 1829 visit) in his third symphony—inspiring the gratitude of its dedicatee, Queen Victoria. We’ll also hear one of the six “Hamburg” symphonies of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, second son of the immortal Johann Sebastian Bach. C.P.E. Bluegrass band Bearfoot makes tracks to RACC

Bearfoot will perform at the Miller Center for the Arts at Reading Area Community College on Friday at 8 p.m.
Bearfoot is one of the hottest young groups to hit the Blue Grass scene since Nickel Creek! This Alaska-based quintet combines youthful grit with harmonic romance in artfully crafted original works hinting at Appalachian, Southern blues and jazz influences. "We aren't strictly bluegrass," Mickelson said. "We've never had a banjo, and we found out when we were doing shows in the Southeast that it's not bluegrass if you don't have a banjo. Reading, PA - 2 Worlds 2 Voices equals fortunate fans.

The "2 Worlds 2 Voices" tour featuring the talents of country superstar Reba McEntire and the first American Idol, Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson, rolls into Reading on Saturday night for one show at the Sovereign Center.

The pair teamed up in the winter for a well-reviewed, two-month blitz of 15 shows that was so successful, they decided to do it all again, and headed out to begin a set of 24 shows that will have them finishing out the tour in Baltimore in November.

The 2 Worlds 2 Voices tour features one band and the two stars singing together, singing separately and - if this tour mimics the earlier tour - even singing each other's songs.

John B. Rosenthal, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Pennrose Properties, Inc., along with its affiliates Pennrose Management Company and Pennrose Service Company. Acting on his sweeping vision to promote a better quality of living for the residents of affordable housing communities, Mr. Rosenthal launched Pennrose Properties in 1981. It was Mr. Rosenthal's innovative approach and the belief in the power of private initiative partnering with nonprofit and community organizations that set Pennrose apart. As one of the first developers in Pennsylvania to effectively utilize the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program (LIHTC), Pennrose is widely considered to have set the industry standards and become one of the Mid-Atlantic region's premier affordable housing developers. For more than thirty years, Mr. Rosenthal has championed the goal of making a profound impact on the lives of lower income families by working to provide meaningful supportive services in a quality, secure and affordable living environment. To date, Pennrose has developed more than 10,000 affordable apartments. Mr.Rosenthal's achievements in rebuilding communities and his sensitive approach to historic building conversions earned him the F. Otto Haas Lifetime Achievement Award from Preservation Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth's only private, nonprofit
organization dedicated to the protection of historically and architecturally significant properties.
Mr. Rosenthal was also the recipient of Ernst & Young's Greater Philadelphia Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2002. many civic organizations and commissions, including the Tri-County Commission, Universal Community Homes, and the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center. Mr. Rosenthal is survived by his wife, Linda; a brother, Richard and his wife, Julia; a sister, Susan; and nephews - Daniel, Matthew, Andrew, and Peter; and a niece, Sandra.
Services will be held on Friday, October 3, at The Riverside Memorial Chapel, located at 76th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, New York City.

I have long been a fan of Japanese action cinema. Any movie with a Samurai in it, and I want to buy it. I recently began expanding my samurai movie collection from just Seven Samurai to now...Seven Samurai, Sword of Doom, Shogun Assassin 1+2, Shogun's Samurai, Samurai Rebellion, and Last Samurai (I know its an American movie, but with Hiroyuki Sanada and Ken Watanabe in it...it counts!) I have payed some form of homage to samurai in past comics...the fact that Spartacus keeps a katana at the desk is evidence, but I wanted to really get into the Samurai theme, and so....here is my thank you to all those legends of Japanese Samurai Cinema....thank you for countless hours of entertainment. So, to my fans (Dennis, Jen, Tim, and now my cousin Gabe!) I say, enjoy this comic!

P.S. On a sad note, this will be one of my last comics made in the Abraham Lincoln hotel. I have recently accepted a position at Nationwide Insurance, they are, after all, on my side, and Will begin work there in mid-October. Do not despair! I will still write comics and post them here. For a long time I always wondered why some rooms ordered so many extra towels. Of course, I understand everyone has their own special needs and wants, but I always thought it was interesting the sheer number ordered by some rooms. Then one day I thought, "Man! What if they are creating a towel rope and escaping the hotel!?" And so, this comic was born. Of course, this has never happened, and will never happen as our windows do not open and no one would try such a dangerous or stupid stunt. She guided me to the information I was looking for and confirmed that a room would be available for me. I was able to book using my corporate tool, and upon my arrival, Stephanie immediately recognized my name and recalled speaking with me. She was very up beat and efficient. She has a great attitude and makes a person feel as comfortable as possible being away from home. I travel weekly and stay at many hotels. It is truly rare to find an individual like this at the front desk. Although many front desks have efficiency, they don-t have personality to go with it. I would like to make sure that Stephanie definately is recognized by your organization. Hello my readers (Dennis, Tim, Jen....and everybody else) Here it is, the 15th installment! I cannot believe I have made so many! I recently joined the ranks of men; I learned how to tie a tie! My father said to me, "Gaby (That's my family nickname that NO ONE knows...but now that it's on a blog I guess the whole planet will know!) You can shave, and now you can tie a tie, welcome to manhood." And so I was thinking about what to make the 15th comic and it hit me: TIES! And so, here before you is my idea come to fruition. I hope you enjoy this comic, which I dedicate to Mr. Robert Lepore, our General Manager, who moved on to a new future. Ah yes, I have returned my readers! In this, the latest installment of the soon to be syndicated series (HOPEFULLY), I explore the world of requests. As a Guest Service Agent, I am constantly receiving and answering requests. It is what we do. We cannot let the sheer volume or diversity of requests throw us into a mania, like poor Spartacus does. A good hotel will act on requests as soon as possible, to make the guest's stay the best it can be. A small disclaimer, we do not, under any circumstances, supply dune buggies, or helicopter pads. Also, none of our GSA's are qualified to put a light saber together.... so for all those aspiring Jedis, we apologize in advance. Until next time...

Hello my fans! (Hannah, Tim, Dennis and even Mr. L!) This comic was bred out of three things. First, I am a HUGE fan of Green Arrow! He is a superhero in the DC comics universe and a longtime favorite! I have recently been splurging on the comics and wanted to make a comic with a little homage to my favorite costumed vigilante. Second, intoxicated people make good conversation starters. And lastly, our policy about photo IDs. And so, here is the latest installment of Hotel. Enjoy and see you next time!

We had an absolutely amazing time at our reception. People are still talking about how nice and how much fun it was!

Sian Elliott played a huge role in making sure everything ran smoothly, was ready, and looked perfect. She worked well with our vendors, and the day-of-coordinator that we hired even commented on how easy she was to work with.

We want to stress how happy we were with the end result of our Wedding Reception, Saturday evening; and our Breakfast Brunch, held Sunday morning; both were wonderful events and were handled so smoothly and professionally.

This postcard is dated Oct 14, 1969 and made its way all the way to North Haven, Conn. before returning home some 39 years later.

The hotel has closed, been renovated, and opened again in 1996; since this postcard was mailed; but the Peoples Bank seen across the street from the hotel is just now completing renovations and has received a much needed face lift.
No longer a People's Bank, it is now an M&T Bank.

Notice also the awnings on the windows of the storefront of the hotel. Today the awnings have moved up a floor and now cover the lobby windows. The storefront space is now exposed and the lobby is too dark in this author's opinion. Maybe we will take a page from the past, and someday remove the current awnings and place them over the storefront and over the balconies like they should be, as seen in other postcards from the past (post coming soon), leaving the lobby windows open to brighten the interior.

The Washington Street store front is currently for rent. Contact us if you'd like to set-up shop. It would be a great spot for a coffee shop, florist, art gallery, or maybe even a day spa. Call 610-372-3700 for more information about renting the space.

During my stay at the Abraham Lincoln Historic Wyndham hotel(sic.), the service and support from the entire staff has been outstanding. In addition, all of you make it a lot of fun to stay here. You all should be very proud of your performance.

I am probably missing a few names, but i really enjoyed each day when dealing with Maria, Stephanie, Melanie, Gabriel, and Jason at the front desk. In addition, as I spent a lot of time there, Jennifer and Eric were always good to talk with in the bar and i forgot the other 2 bartenders' names but they were also very helpful and entertaining.

All of you were quick to recommend places to eat, shop, visit, etc. In addition, our group certainly appreciated the fair prices on room and food that our team was able to negotiate with you. We have been constantly asked to consider staying at other places by our company but 4 of us have stood our ground to stay here as the Wyndham service and staff are great, we can walk to other eating establishments, and we are closer to our work site.

Hello my adoring fans! (Again, Tim, Dennis...and maybe Hannah) This comic deals with brochures. We pride ourselves with always having information about things to do in the area, and also in Pennsylvania in general. However, there are lots and lots of little places that also have brochures...one of my favorites is the small "Original Roadside America!" miniature village. It's little trasures like that that make PA a fun place to live. Also, check out Ten Thousand Villages. It's a drive, but when you see all the handmade crafts, jewelry, furniture and toys, the trip is well worth it. So enjoy the latest installment of Hotel, and we look foward to seeing you!

Cyclists return to Reading June 5

The Reading Classic, the second leg of the Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling, will be held June 5, 2008.

Some 500 cyclists, professionals and amateurs, are expected to race on the streets of downtown Reading.

Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with an outdoor expo where fans can visit booths of local businesses.

Starting at 10 a.m., the elite men’s teams will take to the course for a 35-mile criterion, or short race, followed by the 25-mile women’s elite race at 11:15 a.m.

The pros are scheduled at 1 p.m. for the grueling 75-mile race, expecting to end at 4-4:30 p.m.

Schedule for Race Day:

6:00am ALL parked cars must be off of race route [cars will be towed if not moved]

9:00am Downtown [short] course will be closed to ALL traffic

10:00am Start of Amateur race

11:15pm Start of Women’s race

12 NOON ENTIRE course will be closed to ALL traffic

1:00pm Start of Pro Cycling race

4:30pm Finish of race and Award Ceremony

Born in South Wales, Ms. Elliott joins us following her graduation from Penn State University. Her previous Hotel Catering/Sales experience includes The Inn at Chester Springs, the Toftrees Resort in State College, and The Breakers Resort in Florida, where she assisted in planning and executing some truly extravagant events.

Dog Show Announced for Nov. 20 - 23, 2008

The 2008 Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Shows will be held November 22 and 23 at the Greater Reading Expo Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Saturday’s show will host the National Dog Show Presented by Purina, America’s most popular dog show, which will be broadcast nationally by NBC on Thanksgiving Day. Each day is a complete, all-breed benched dog show, culminating in the presentation of Best in Show awards for both Saturday and Sunday. The benched format means dogs and their people are in the hall virtually all day for the public to visit, admire and learn from.

Tickets for each day are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia shows are preceded by unbenched all-breed shows at the same location, presented on Thursday, Nov. 20 by the Penn Treaty Kennel Club and on Friday, Nov. 21 by the Greater Philadelphia Dog Fanciers Association.
